Visualizing For Hope

Everywhere we look, media floods us with negative news and fear-driven narratives. Yet we only see fragments of the world – carefully selected pieces that often divide rather than unite us. What if we could change that perspective? What if visualization could become a tool for hope, optimism and peace? While pessimists see problems, we see patterns. While they see chaos, we see connections. While headlines scream crisis, information design can whisper hope. When we make complex data accessible, when we reveal multiple perspectives within the same dataset, when we show the human stories behind the numbers – we create opportunities for empathy and understanding that transcend traditional boundaries.
This session brings together practitioners who have chosen to wield their visualization skills as instruments of hope. They don't ignore the world's problems – they illuminate paths forward. They don't simplify complex realities – they make them comprehensible. They don't create false optimism – they reveal authentic possibilities for positive change.

The event will be in English only and will be streamed live on YouTube. You will be able to ask questions via Slido. Darjan Hil from Superdot Studio will host the event.

Thank you very much! We look forward to seeing you at our next On Data And Design event.

Here are the speakers

Jose Duarte

EasyDataViz

Bogotá

Jose is the founder of EasyDataViz, a platform dedicated to making data visualization accessible for everyone. He will explore how democratizing data literacy becomes an act of hope—showing us how teaching others to see patterns instead of problems can transform fear into understanding, one visualization at a time.

Francis Gagnon

Voilà

Montreal

Francis is the founder of Voilià, a Montreal-based information design studio specializing in making complex information clear and actionable. For this session, he'll demonstrate how professional information design can counter fear-driven narratives by revealing multiple perspectives within the same dataset, showing that complexity doesn't have to mean chaos.

Pei Ying Loh

Kontinentalist

Uppsala

Pei Ying leads Kontinentalist, a data storytelling studio advocating for a more equitable world. Her background in history drives her work to change perceptions about Asia and its cultures. For our evening, she'll share experiences that bridge the gap between research and the public, enhancing our data experiences with a decolonial methodology.
